Research Interests

Educational Background: B.A. 1991 (Bologna); B.A.-Hons, M.A. 1997
(Witwatersrand); Ph.D. 2006 (Witwatersrand).

My doctoral dissertation in Sociology at the School of Social Sciences,
University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is titled "Social
Citizenship and the Transformations of Waged Labor in the Making of
Post-Apartheid South Africa, 1994-2001."

My research interests are in the study of African labor movements, with
particular regard to Southern Africa, in relation to changing forms of
employment, collective identities, civil society, social movements, social
policy, and social citizenship. On these issues I have recently edited
(with Tom Bramble) a book on Rethinking the Labour Movement in the
"New South Africa" (London: Ashgate, 2003).

Teaching Interests

At Ohio State University, I am currently teaching courses on "Introduction
to African Civilizations: 1870 to the Present" (undegraduate), "Political
Development of Sub-Saharan Africa" (graduate) and "African Social
Movements in the Age of Globalization" (graduate).
